Why An Engine Stalls At Stop & How To Fix It
Are you wondering why does you car stall when you stop? Coming up to a stop and having your car stall is both embarrassing and dangerous. This might be difficult to diagnose the problem yourself if you’re not mechanically inclined or experienced but there are steps you can take to educate yourself and isolate the issue.
However, If the torque converter is broken, or worn, or the transmission is low in transmission fluid, the converter will not work properly. The car will be unable to maintain pressure at low speeds which will cause the engine to shut off. A defective TCS (Torque Converter Solenoid) can also cause the same issue.
The Mass AIrflow sensor (MAF) Is located between the air filter and the intake on the engine. The mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine. A faulty mass air flow sensor could affect your air fuel ratio which would affect how your vehicle idles and at low speeds.
(A mass air flow sensor can be cleaned with carb cleaner or change it if it’s bad).
The oxygen (O2) sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold to monitor how much unburnt oxygen is exiting the engine. It tells the engine if the fuel mixture is burning too lean, (not enough fuel). So you’re advise to change it if it’s bad.
The fuel system would be a logical place to check if your car engine is stalling when you come to a stop. (A dirty fuel filter or a worn fuel pump might be the fault).
The fuel pump is responsible for pumping the fuel from the gas tank to the injector and applying the pressure needed to inject the fuel into the cylinders. A slight pause in fuel pressure could be enough to stall the engine.

The fuel filter (one in the gas tank and one between the engine). It ensure only clean gas gets to the injectors. A clogged filter could prevent sufficient fuel volume from reaching the cylinder resulting in your car’s engine stalling.
If fuel injectors get clogged or quit working the engine won’t get sufficient fuel to the injectors, resulting in your car’s engine stalling.
Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor brings current to the ignition spark plugs. It cause rough idling or stalls when stopped if they go bad.
Engines take advantage of the Vacuum at the intake manifold to power engine accessorie. The pistons in an internal combustion engine act as plungers sucking oxygen through the intake manifold into the cylinders.
Rubber hoses are used to connect the accessories to the intake manifold. If any of this these hoses cracks leak, excess oxygen is allowed into the intake manifold which can cause problems with idling possibly causing the engine to stall.
Brake Booster Vacuum Leak
The brake boosters are known to develop internal vacuum leaks which can cause your vehicle to stall at idle.
Ignition spark plugs brings current to the cylinders, the plug can cause your vehicle to stall at idle if bad or leaking fire.
Ignition Plug Coil
The ignition plug coil supply fire to the spark plugs for start engine, the coil can cause your vehicle to stall at idle if bad or leaking fire.
